Can a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner Diagnose and Prescribe?

Yes. In Florida a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP-BC) can evaluate you, diagnose a mental health condition, prescribe and manage medication, and provide therapy, for children through adults. If you have been referred to one, or found one with a shorter wait than a psychiatrist, this page covers what that means for your care.

Training & Qualifications

Graduate-Level Education

PMHNPs complete a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) or Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) with a concentration in psychiatric-mental health. This training includes hundreds of clinical hours working directly with patients under supervision.

Board Certification

After completing their degree, PMHNPs pass a rigorous national certification exam administered by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). The "PMHNP-BC" credential indicates board certification in psychiatric-mental health.

The Nursing Difference

PMHNPs are trained in a holistic nursing model that considers the whole person: mind, body, and life context. This approach emphasizes collaboration, patient education, and treating the individual rather than just the diagnosis.

PMHNP vs. Psychiatrist

Both PMHNPs and psychiatrists provide psychiatric care, but their training paths and approaches differ.
