Getting started

How to prepare for your first psychiatric evaluation.

The initial evaluation is a conversation, not a test. You do not need a diagnosis, a theory, or your history in order. Most of what helps is thinking a few things through first. That way the hour goes to what you came for. Here is what is worth having ready.

Know what the visit is for.

At the initial evaluation, the provider builds a picture of what is going on. Then you agree together on what to do about it. It runs longer than the visits that follow, and it shapes all of them. At New Leaf Mental Health this is the first appointment you book.

Nothing is decided before it. Whatever the plan turns out to be, you should understand the thinking before anything starts.

Four things to think about first.

You do not need notes. But these four come up in almost every initial evaluation. They are easier to answer if you have thought about them once.

  1. 1.What made you book now. Not the whole history. Just what changed lately. This is often the most useful answer of the hour.
  2. 2.How long it has been going on. A rough sense is fine. Since the spring is a real answer.
  3. 3.What you have tried. Anything counts. Other providers, therapy, changes at home or at work, what helped, and what did not.
  4. 4.What you want to be different. Be concrete. I want to sleep through the night beats I want to feel better.

What to have with you.

  • The name and number of any other provider in your care.
  • A list of anything you take now, including what you take without a prescription.
  • Your pharmacy's name and location.
  • Your insurance card, if you are using one.
  • Rough dates of any past treatment or hospital care.

For that list, a photo of the labels is quicker than writing it out. It is also less likely to have a mistake in it.

For a video visit.

Test your connection the day before, not five minutes ahead. After that, two things matter more than the tech:

  • Somewhere private. A room with a door, and headphones. The most common problem is not the connection. It is having nowhere to talk freely.
  • Somewhere you can stay put. A visit taken while driving, walking, or parked between errands goes worse than the same hour at home.

See how it works for the setup and what happens after you book.

You do not have to have it sorted.

People often worry they will forget something, or not explain it well. That is expected. The visit is built for it. I do not know is a real answer, and a common one.

If something matters and you remember it later, it goes in the follow-up visit. The first visit starts the picture. It does not have to finish it.
